The Use of Recycled Coarse Aggregate in Self-Compacting Concrete - A Review

Abstract

Self-compacting concrete (SCC) possesses several benefits in terms of production and placement over traditional concrete. Elimination of external or internal vibration of compaction, better flowability, workability, pumpability, and as well as increased bonding with congested reinforcement are some of the benefits of using SCC. And if we can use recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) as the coarse aggregate in SCC, there is a possibility to decrease the environmental impact of producing concrete. The work that we are presenting in this paper explores to construct upon the knowledge that we can get on this topic. We reviewed the workability, strength, and fracture properties of SCC's containing 0%, 25% 50%, 75% and 100% of coarse RCA from 4 different thesis papers. Reviewing those papers, we found out that if we use 25% and 50% RCA in SCC, there is little to no negative impact that can be observed for workability and strength properties in all of them . However, with increasing the level of RCA more than 50% showed decrease in strength tests
