dc.description.abstract | The transport sector of Dhaka city is categorized by terrible, congestion and delays, insufficient traffic
management, poor organization among agencies, and also lack of integration between different
transportation modes. It is perhaps the only city in the world of this size without having a well-organized and
scheduled mass transit system. Implementing and improving circular water transport can facilitate the
Government of Bangladesh to achieve this goal. The main objective of this study is to investigate the existing
situation of the Ghats and riverbank conditions of the circular waterway transportation of Gabtoli to
Babubazar; analyze the problems and expectations of the waterway and recommend necessary measures to
enable circular river transport to play a greater role in the transportation system of Dhaka city. From the
study on water transport from Gabtoli to Babubazar, it was understood that in the near future waterbus can
travel periodically with a number of prospective passengers. An efficient water transport system should
provide proper and effective linkage to the existing transport system. All the possible road transport
options should be available at the landing stations from bus service to subway. A possible linkage should be
provided between the landing stations and nearby public transport facilities. Para-transport facilities
should also be provided to connect the water-bus users to the nearest public transport facilities. To ensure
swift, safe and unhindered turning of waterbus, modern landing facilities should be provided. There should
be the availability of adequate information on the various routes, fares, and timing of the waterway
services. After analysis prospective routes of water buses from Gabtoli to Babubazar have been proposed
based on demand and respondents’ responses. | en_US |
