COMPARATIVE STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS IE (RESIDENTIAL-COMMERCIAL) BUILDING USING BNBC 2006 AND BNBC 2020

Abstract

This thesis presents a comparative structural analysis of a 45-storey mixed-use (residential-commercial) reinforced concrete building, designed according to two versions of the Bangladesh National Building Code—BNBC 2006 and BNBC 2020. The building consists of commercial spaces at the front portion and residential units at the rear. The study aims to evaluate the structural design differences between the two codes, particularly in terms of seismic performance, load requirements, and overall safety. Using ETABS software, both models were analyzed with consistent building geometry, material properties, and load combinations. The results reveal that BNBC 2020 incorporates more rigorous seismic and structural guidelines, resulting in increased base shear, larger structural members, and potentially higher construction costs. Nevertheless, these changes significantly improve structural integrity and occupant safety. This research underscores the importance of adopting the updated code for the safe and efficient design of high-rise mixed-use buildings in Bangladesh.
