A Study to Explore the Labour Rights for Women in Readymade Garment Sector of Bangladesh”
Abstract
The garment industry in Bangladesh is the number one business in the country, accounting for
80% of the country‘s exports. Bangladesh has a population of 168.1 million, which includes a
large and inexpensive labor force of about 90 million. This study is conducted based on some
workers from different garments of Bangladesh with the current scenario of garments. Specific
violations documented here include workers‘ rights violations such as physical abuse as well as
verbal abuse which is sometimes of a sexual nature, forced overtime, denial of paid maternity
leave, failure to pay wages and bonuses on time or in full, pressures on workers not to use the
toilet, and provision of dirty drinking water and also delay in the law enforcement the above that
has been violated. The factories were in bad shape for the workers. Giant factories were often
unsafe and there was a general lack of permits, laws and supervision.
In this research overall current scenario of garments of Bangladeshi and workers‘ rights
with relating laws. The study also shows the ways to develop the situation.
