dc.description.abstract | Rivers are vital natural resources that play a crucial role in the socio-economic and ecological
landscape of Bangladesh. This thesis provides a comprehensive analysis of the legal
mechanisms in place for river protection under statutory provisions in Bangladesh and critically
examines the loopholes within this framework. The research delves into the existing legal
framework governing river protection, encompassing various national and international laws,
policies, and regulations. It evaluates the effectiveness of these provisions in safeguarding the
country's rivers from degradation, pollution, and encroachment. Through an interdisciplinary
approach, this study explores the interplay of legal, environmental, and socio-economic factors
contributing to the degradation of rivers. It investigates how enforcement mechanisms,
institutional capacity, and public awareness impact the implementation of river protection laws.
The critical analysis reveals significant loopholes in the legal framework, including ineffective
enforcement, lack of coordination among relevant authorities, and inadequate penalties for
violations. These loopholes have allowed for continued river pollution and encroachment,
resulting in dire consequences for the environment and community’s dependent on these water
bodies. This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the legal aspects of river
protection in Bangladesh and offers recommendations to address the identified shortcomings,
thereby contributing to the preservation and sustainable management of the country's rivers. | en_US |
